The Reality of Traditional Hiring

Less than 1% of applicants will excel and thrive in a role. Even among those who look amazing on paper or ace interviews, fewer than 10% will actually perform well.

  • Resumes and profiles are often misleading. They don’t provide a reliable indication of future job performance.
  • Interviews alone are not enough. Relying on social feel or interview performance is a poor predictor of future success.
  • Past performance predicts future success. The best indicator that someone will excel in your business is that they have excelled in similar roles and settings.

Best Hiring Practices for Scale-Ups

  • Never hire in haste due to time pressure, no matter how strong the CV appears. This is even more important for senior roles.
  • Don’t rely on strangers. The best hires are people you’ve worked with before or come highly recommended by trusted sources.
  • Consult before committing. If you’re unsure about a candidate, engage them in an extended consulting role to assess their fit in real-world scenarios.
  • Talk to past bosses. Get a full picture of the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses by speaking to their former employers from the last five years.
